Ivermectin dosing

Ivermectin 1% is equal to Ivermectin 10 mg/ml, this is the strength of  what is in 1% ivermectin injection for cattle.

Veterinarians very commonly use drugs off label.  This means the label does not state it is for dogs but as there is no product out there that is labeled for dogs, we extrapolate and use what we have.    This does not mean all drugs are safe for all animals.  Cats are not small dogs and horses are not cattle.  However, some species respond to drugs in the same way and other species.  Therefore, we can use this knowledge to use cattle medicine on dogs.

The doses listed below are for basically healthy animals.  Not pregnant, old, debilitated or otherwise impaired.  The choice to use these doses is yours.  Using them in no way holds me responsible for any outcome of any sort on any animal.

Some doses are given orally and some are intended to be injected.  If you have never given injections, do NOT practice on your own pet.  If you do not know what the abbreviation for the injection means (IM, SQ), then that is a good indication you should not be giving it.  Therefore, I am not going to explain those terms.

These doses are the ones I use in my clinic on a regular basis.

There are many ivermectin products on the market.  Impact ivermectin is what I currently use due to its excellent pricing.  Click on any of the items listed below to order.  Print this page to keep as a handy reference with your ivermectin.

Dogs

As an ectoparasiticide (miticide) to kill mange mites, Scabies or ear mites (Sarcoptes

scabiei/Otodectes cynotis)  0.3 mg/kg by mouth.  Repeat in 14 day intervals until healed.

Example: 20 pound dog would get 0.27 ml .  this is impossible to dose so you would round up

to .3 ml  and give by mouth.

Example: 40 pound dog would get  .54 ml.  round up to .6 ml and give by mouth.

As an endoparasiticide (roundworms, hookworms and whipworms)  Does NOT kill tapeworms.

0.2 mg/kg by mouth once.  Do not use in collies.

Example: 20 pound dog would get .18.  round up to .2 ml and give by mouth.

Example:  40 pound dog would get .36 ml.  round up to .4 ml and give by mouth.

Reptiles

    For nematodes and external parasites

0.2 mg/kg po (by mouth0 once then repeat in 2 weeks.  (**Ivermectin is toxic to chelonians.)

Example:  5 pound reptile would get .04 ml.  this is less than 1/10th of a ml.  Reptiles must

be dosed accurately so use a 1 ml syringe.

Birds

It is very risky to treat  birds with ivermectin if you do not know what you are doing.  The product must be diluted for use.  You must use propylene glycol for dilution.  This is very risky for most people so I am not going to list doses for birds.  Please contact me personally to order diluted ivermectin and for proper dosing.

Horses

For susceptible parasites 0.2 mg/kg by mouth.  This same dose is used for lice and mange but is

give at 4 day intervals until free of parasites

Example:  500 pound horse would get 4.54 ml by mouth.  A safe regimen is every 2 month.

Example:  800 pound horse would get 7.27 ml.  round up to 7.3 ml and give by mouth.

Llamas

For susceptible parasites 0.2 mg/kg by mouth , one dose.
